Looking for a calm, hands-on creative session you can enjoy in just a few hours?
This relaxed half-day workshop is a lovely way to slow down and try something new.
Join ropeworker and basket maker Laurence Knoop to learn the traditional technique of coiled basket making, working with flax rope, needle and twine. Step by step, you’ll build your own small rope basket — enjoying the rhythm and satisfaction of shaping something useful with your hands.
You’ll choose from a range of beautifully naturally dyed ropes, and once you’ve got the hang of the technique, Laurence will encourage you to gently adapt the shape to make your basket your own. Along the way, you’ll also be introduced to traditional ropework tools and hear a little about flax fibre and its history in the UK.
By the end of the session, you’ll leave with:
✔️ A hand-coiled rope basket (approx. 12cm x 8cm)
✔️ A new appreciation of this heritage craft
✔️ A few hours well spent making something slowly and well
No previous experience needed. All materials are provided.
